The moated Château de Beersel is one of the last well-preserved examples of medieval military architecture in our country.
Built around 1420, it was an outpost for the defense of Brussels. The castle's fortifications are classic: a deep moat, drawbridge, crenellated ramparts and loopholes.
The castle is featured in Bob & Bobette's album “The Treasure of Beersel”.
Godefroid of Leuven built a fortress here in 1236 to protect Brabant from attacks.
The castle was destroyed and rebuilt several times, evolving from a medieval defensive stronghold into a romantic residence.
Inside the castle, you will find nearly a thousand works of art, including furniture, tapestries, paintings, numerous goldsmithing pieces, stained glass windows, and sculptures. In one of the museum's wings, you can admire the bathroom, bedroom, and the "Red Room" of Marquise Arconati Visconti.
In addition to a park featuring a 17th-century pavilion, an old chapel, and a triumphal arch in honor of Napoleon, the estate also boasts a magnificent museum garden with local fruit and vegetable varieties.
